How this calculator works

A parking lot is the same volume-times-density calculation as any asphalt job, scaled up. The tool multiplies the paved area by the compacted thickness and the mix density, divides by 2,000 for US tons, and adds your waste and compaction factor. Enter the overall dimensions, set the commercial thickness, and it returns an order-ready tonnage with the underlying volume.

The formula

Tons = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Thickness in ÷ 12) × 145 lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000

With waste: Tons × (1 + Waste %)

Example: a 100 ft × 100 ft lot at 3 in = 10,000 sq ft × (3 ÷ 12) × 145 ÷ 2,000 = 181.25 tons. Density of 145 lb/ft³ is the standard hot-mix value, and 2,000 is the pounds in one US short ton.

Example 1 — a 10,000 sq ft lot at 3 inches

  4. Convert to tons: 362,500 lb ÷ 2,000 = 181.25 tons
  5. Add 10% waste: 181.25 × 1.10 = 199.4 tons

Order about: 200 US tons

Islands, curbs and irregular edges on a real lot push waste toward 10%, so plan on roughly 200 tons for a nominal 10,000 sq ft surface.
