How this calculator works
The converter takes one input — layer thickness in inches — and returns the same depth in feet, centimeters and meters. Feet is the value you carry into a quantity calculation, because the standard asphalt volume formula multiplies an area in square feet by a thickness in feet. Metric units are there for drawings and for suppliers quoting in kilograms per cubic meter. The formula
Thickness (ft) = Thickness (in) ÷ 12
Thickness (cm) = Thickness (in) × 2.54

Example: 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft. 4 in ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft. The metric factors are exact rather than rounded — the international inch is defined as exactly 25.4 millimeters, so 1 in = 2.54 cm = 0.0254 m by definition, not by measurement.
Worked examples
Example 1 — a 20 ft × 40 ft driveway at 3 inches
- Area:

- Convert thickness: 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft

- Convert to tons: 29,000 lb ÷ 2,000 = 14.5 tons

Metric specs are written in millimeters, so a 2.5 inch overlay reads as a 63.5 mm lift — close to, but not the same as, a nominal 60 mm or 65 mm one.

- Thickness is not the only depth on the drawing. The aggregate base is specified separately and is not asphalt tonnage.
