Exam Scoring Strategy

Understanding how your AP exam is scored can help you optimize your time during the test. Most exams are split between Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and Free Response Questions (FRQ).

  • 1Balanced Effort: Both sections usually contribute significantly to your final score. Target consistency across both.
  • 2No Penalty for Guessing: On the MCQ section, you are not penalized for wrong answers. Always bubble something in!
  • 3FRQ Rubrics: Scorers use specific rubrics. Understanding common point-catchers can boost your grade.

AP Exam Planning FAQs

How are AP scores calculated?+

AP scores are calculated by combining your scores on the multiple-choice section and the free-response section. Each section is weighted, and the total composite score is then mapped to a 1-5 scale based on the curve for that specific year's exam.

What is a good AP score?+

Most colleges grant credit or placement for scores of 3, 4, or 5. A score of 5 is considered 'extremely well qualified', a 4 is 'well qualified', and a 3 is 'qualified'.

How accurate are these AP score calculators?+

Our calculators use the latest available scoring distributions and weighting from College Board to provide the most accurate estimate possible. However, the exact curve can vary slightly from year to year.
