Who should use this and when
Use it on a timed, full-length paper that you have marked against the scoring guidelines. The seven free-response fields use the published 10-and-4 maximums, so points from a guideline that follows that structure go in as they are. The three long questions hold 30 of the 46 points, so they matter most to the result. The tool cannot judge your partial-credit marking.
Tips for scoring a Chemistry practice paper
- Award long-question points part by part. Each is a multipart, 10-point question, so total the parts rather than judging the whole answer.
- Mark calculations step by step. The exam tests solving problems using mathematical relationships, so do not credit a final number that your working does not support.
- Enter the questions in order. The first three fields cap at 10 and the last four at 4; a value above the cap is cut down to it.

How is the AP Chemistry exam structured?
It runs 3 hours 15 minutes in two sections of equal weight. Section I is 60 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, 50% of the score. Section II is 7 free-response questions in 1 hour 45 minutes, also 50%. The multiple-choice section mixes individual questions with question sets that share a diagram or data presentation.
How many points are the AP Chemistry free-response questions worth?
Three long, multipart questions are worth 10 points each and four short-answer, multipart questions are worth 4 points each, which makes 46 raw points. The College Board publishes these per-question values on its exam page, and this calculator uses them as they are.

What composite score do I need for a 5 on AP Chemistry?
There is no official figure, because the College Board does not release its cut points. This calculator treats a composite of 74 or more out of 100 as a 5 and 60 to 73 as a 4. Both ranges are our estimates, not College Board numbers.
