How this calculator works
Knowing the tonnage tells you what to buy; this tool tells you how far it goes. It takes a weight in US short tons, a compacted thickness in inches, and a mix density, and returns the area that quantity will pave in square feet. That is the number you check a delivery against — whether a quoted order actually covers the driveway, walkway or stall at the depth you want. The formula
Sq ft = (Tons × 2,000 ÷ Density) ÷ (Thickness in ÷ 12)
Cubic feet = Tons × 2,000 ÷ Density (lb/ft³)
Substitution: at 145 lb/ft³, 1 ton × 2,000 = 2,000 lb; 2,000 ÷ 145 = 13.79 cu ft; thickness 2 in ÷ 12 = 0.1667 ft; 13.79 ÷ 0.1667 = 82.8 sq ft. The 2,000 is exact (pounds per short ton); density and thickness are the two inputs that decide how far the load spreads.
Worked examples
Example 1 — coverage of a single ton at 2 inches

- To cubic feet: 2,000 ÷ 145 = 13.79 cu ft
- Thickness to feet: 2 ÷ 12 = 0.1667 ft
- To square feet: 13.79 ÷ 0.1667 = 82.8 sq ft
Coverage: ≈ 82 sq ft per ton
At 4 inches the same ton covers only about 41 sq ft — coverage halves as depth doubles.
Example 2 — a 20 ton order at 3 inches

- To cubic feet: 20 × 2,000 ÷ 145 = 275.9 cu ft
- Thickness to feet: 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
- To square feet: 275.9 ÷ 0.25 = 1,103 sq ft
Coverage: ≈ 1,103 sq ft at 3 in
The same 20 tons spread at 2 inches would cover about 1,655 sq ft — check the depth before trusting the area.

Tips and common pitfalls
- Coverage always needs a thickness. A tonnage with no depth gives no meaningful area — enter the compacted design thickness every time.
- Remember the inverse relationship. Thicker means less area: the coverage figure drops as fast as the depth rises.
- Use compacted thickness. Base the calculation on the finished in-place depth, not the loose lift behind the paver.
- Leave a margin. Real edges, transitions and compaction eat into theoretical coverage, so don't plan a job to the last square foot.

How many square feet does 1 ton of asphalt cover?+
At 2 inches thick and the standard 145 lb/ft³ density, one ton of asphalt covers about 82 square feet. A heavier 150 lb/ft³ mix covers nearer 80 sq ft, and coverage halves if you double the thickness.
What is the formula for converting tons to square feet?+

At 145 lb/ft³, one square yard of asphalt one inch thick weighs about 109 lb — the familiar estimator's rule of roughly 110 lb per square yard per inch. A square yard is 9 square feet, and each square foot per inch is about 12.08 lb.
Why can't area be worked out from tonnage alone?+
Because coverage depends on how thick and how dense the layer is. The same number of tons spreads over a large thin area or a small thick one, so you must enter a thickness and a density for the result to mean anything.
