How this calculator works
Contractors price a small repair as patch area plus a fixed charge for the visit. The tool multiplies the repair's length by its width and applies the per-square-foot rate you enter, which covers material and labor for the patch. It does not add the mobilization fee, so add that yourself, as in the formula below.
That fixed fee is why small jobs cost more per square foot: bringing a truck, a crew and hot mix costs about the same for 9 square feet as for 90. Divide the fee by the area and add it to the rate for the true cost per square foot. The formula
Example: a 100 sq ft patch at $12 / sq ft is $1,200 in area cost, before a $500–$1,500 mobilization fee. With an $800 fee the effective rate is $12 + $800 ÷ 100 = $20 per square foot.
Worked examples
Example 1 — a 100 sq ft patch at $12 / sq ft
- Damaged area:
- 10 ft × 10 ft = 100 sq ft
- Repair rate:
- $12 / sq ft
- Mobilization:
- $800 (typical)
- Area cost: 100 × $12 = $1,200
- Add mobilization: $1,200 + $800 = $2,000
Estimated total: ≈ $2,000

Example 2 — three 3 ft × 3 ft potholes: three visits or one
- Each pothole:
- 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 sq ft
- Repair rate:
- $15 / sq ft
- Mobilization:
- $800 per visit
- One pothole, own visit: 9 × $15 + $800 = $935
- Three separate visits: 3 × $935 = $2,805 ($104 per sq ft)
- One visit for all three: 27 × $15 + $800 = $1,205 ($45 per sq ft)

Tips and common pitfalls
- Batch your repairs. One visit pays the mobilization fee once; in Example 2 it cut the bill by more than half.
- Ask for the minimum charge. Below roughly 50–75 square feet the fee outweighs the area cost, and a flat minimum may apply.
- Fix the cause, not just the symptom. A pothole over a drainage problem will return.

A hot-mix patch can usually take traffic within a few hours once cooled, though avoid turning your wheels while stationary on it for about 24 hours. Cold-patch DIY repairs can be driven on almost immediately but keep compacting under traffic.
